While couples who have decided to file for divorce or paternity may have a variety of disagreements, none are more important than those involving decisions about their children. At the Law Office of Lela J. Davis in Cook County, Illinois, we work closely with our clients to ensure that their interests and the best interest of their children are protected.
We handle child custody cases and we understand that there is nothing more important to our clients than their children. We strive to help them reach solutions in child custody matters that not only protect their parental rights, but also further the best interests of their children.
In 2016, Illinois law changed. The term child custody was replaced with the "Allocation of Parental Responsibilities." The term visitation which was used to denote the time the non-custodial parent had with the children has now been replaced with the term "parenting time."
The law outlines 4 categories of parental responsibilities. These areas are: education, religion, extracurricular activities and healthcare. In many cases, this means that one parent will have more parenting time with the children than the other. These responsibilities may be split between the parents or may be the sole responsibility of one parent.
We work closely with our clients to develop an understanding of their individual circumstances and their goals when it comes to their children. Even in hotly contested cases, we have the experience to defend our clients' interests zealously.
